High Definition units: Hughes HIRD-E8 $185 These units are not just for DirecTV. They also pick-up all Terrestrial signals. This is "Antenna TV" for the Lingo challenged. NO access card or subscription is required to use the box in this fashion! The unit will pick up both the old Analog and The Digital broadcasts coming in off your rabbit ears (outdoor antenna would generally be nicer) and convert them to either a Composite (Yellow) S-Video or Component Signal. If you are hooked to the Component output you will get 1080i either in the signals native mode or converted if analog to the digital format. The unit will also convert a Digital 1080i HDTV signal to Composite or the S-Video jack to allow you to watch the new HD channels on your older TV set. These units also feature a Dolby jack for the best in Audio. This unit generates it's High Def output onto Component Video (Y, Pb, Pr,) It does not have any DVI jacks. It outputs a picture in 1080i or 480i but not both at the same time. (When the High Def jacks are on - the standard jacks are off) These are good solid units. If you are adding a unit they will sell you a card for a reasonable fee. We do not sell cards. We find it good business to refuse to sell you what we do not own.
